Press Release: 25th April 2003
Queen's Award for Voluntary Service -
300 VOLUNTARY GROUPS SHORT-LISTED
Nearly 300 voluntary groups have been short-listed
for the first Queen's Award for Voluntary Service to recognise their contribution
and commitment to the community, Home Office Minister, Lord Filkin,
announced today.
The 277 diverse groups are from communities throughout
the country. They range from groups who lend their pets to people
in hospitals, to those who create sensory gardens for the elderly
and disabled.
Up to 200 winning groups will be announced on
2 June.
Lord Filkin said:
"This prestigious new award gives well-deserved
recognition to some of the hundreds of thousands of voluntary
groups across the UK that play such an essential role in our
communities.
"These groups provide a wide range of
important services. They reach out and touch the lives of others,
often providing them with unconditional human contact that would
otherwise be missing. We owe them an enormous debt and I am
delighted their work is being recognised in this way.
"Community activity such as this is
a vital resource - it develops the individual, enlivens the
community and enriches the nation. The Government is actively
supporting the work of the voluntary sector and encouraging
more people to participate in community activity".
The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award recognises the
achievement of groups who volunteer their own time to improve the
quality of life and opportunities for others in their community.
The shortlist has been drawn up by local selection panels.
Notes to editors:
- The Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for Voluntary Service by Groups
in the Community was announced by The Queen on 30th April 2002.
It recognises and rewards excellence in voluntary activities carried
out by groups in the community.
- A successful group will have been able to demonstrate that it:
- has evolved locally and is locally run;
- has a proven track record of active community involvement, normally
over a period of three years or more;
- is well designed to meet a particular need;
- has added significant value by directly providing community-focused
voluntary activities of a very high quality; and
- has generated a high level of local goodwill and respect.
- Short-listed groups fall into the following main categories:
Educational
Emergency response
Environment / regeneration
Health
Playscheme / youth group
Recreation / sports / arts
Self-help / support
Social / community
Social / preventative (eg crime prevention)
- Details of short-listed groups by region are attached. The names
of the winning groups will be issued in time for publication on
2nd June.
- Nomination forms for the 2004 Awards will be available from
2nd June. Further details of the Award can be obtained

- Almost 40 per cent of the population - that's 24 million of
us - volunteer time and energy to help others.
- The Government has set a target of increasing community participation
by five per cent by 2006. The Home Office Citizenship survey showed
that more than 18 million people in England aged 16 and over were
regularly active in their communities. The challenge is to increase
this number by 900,000 by 2006. This includes volunteering - both
formal and informal - as well as other forms of civic activity.
The Citizenship Survey will be repeated in 2003 and 2005 to monitor
progress.
