THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH
PRESENT
THE FIRST GOLDEN JUBILEE AWARDS
Following the service marking the 50th anniversary of
the Coronation on 2nd June 2003, The Queen and the Duke
of Edinburgh presented the first of The Queen's Golden Jubilee Awards for voluntary service by groups in the community.
The names of fourteen groups out of the 200 UK winners were drawn
from a hat to attend the presentation ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
Two representatives from each group were invited. The presentation
was followed by a reception at Lancaster House hosted by Lord Filkin,
the Home Office Minister responsible for the voluntary and community
sector.
The groups attending the ceremony and the reception were:
Lincoln MS Therapy Centre - providing support and therapy
to sufferers and their families. Mrs Judith Aiton and Mr Paul
Wilkinson.
The Woolverstone Project - providing sailing for physically
or mentally disabled East Anglian people. Mr Hugh de las Casas and
Mr Ronald Hollington.The Volunteers of Hospice Care, Isle of Man
- supporting hospice services for the people. Mrs Catherine Leece
and Mrs Freda Dennis.
The Neutral Ground Child Contact Centre - running a London
centre where children can meet their estranged parents. Mrs Pamela
Rackstraw and Mrs Jean Ackland.
Ferryhill Town Youth - bringing together young people in
County Durham through sporting and other activities. Mr David Foster
and Mrs Rita Foster.
The Standish Friendly Visiting Group - befriending and
arranging outings for elderly and isolated people in Wigan. Miss
Joan Lyon and Mrs Christine Coles.
St John Ambulance HQ Transport Division - providing a
volunteer first aid and ambulance service in Northern Ireland. Mr
John Amos and Mr Raymond Spence.
Drug Initiative Group, Forfar - offering young people an alternative
to drug misuse. Mr Colin McKenzie and Mr Rodney Anderson.
The 777 Conservation Group - conserving the
Buckinghamshire environment for the public. Mr Crispin Beale and Mr
Andrew Bradshaw.
'Tandem' - providing transport and a club for elderly
and disabled people in Midhurst and Petworth. Mr Andrew Gibson and
Captain David Phillips.
The Gloucestershire Chinese Women's Guild - supporting
socially excluded and isolated Chinese women and their families. Mrs
Mew Ning Chan-Edmead and Mrs Moi Lin Chong-Fong.
Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Youth and Community Project -
providing activities for young and unemployed people. Mr Jeffrey
Edwards and Mr Ian Benbow.
The Asian Blind Association - advising blind and
partially sighted people and their carers in Coventry. Mrs Bhanumati
Dabhi and Mrs Naseem Rahman, together with their carers.
Manor Young People's Health Project - educating young
people in Sheffield about health issues. Ms Donna Jones and Mr Jake
Bonsall.
